A young, poor peasant, Nemorino, secretly loves the beautiful Adina who pays him no attention. She instead promises to marry an opportunistic sergeant whose small army has arrived in the village. An itinerant and colorful quack, Dr. Dulcamara, arrives offering all kinds of medications and remedies. One is a love potion. Nemorino sees this as his opportunity for gaining Adina’s love. With the only coin he owns, Nemorino asks Dulamara to sell him the elixir (which is actually simple red wine) Happy to get it, Nemorino drinks the whole bottle and becomes intoxicated. Adina is surprised by his behavior insists she doesn’t love him and will soon marry the sergeant. A desperate Nemorino must buy more elixir but has no money. The sergeant reappears offering him money once he signs a contract enlisting in the army. Such a gesture moves Adina; realizing it is Nemorino she really loves, she buys back his contract and declares her love.
The opera has beautiful music being one of the greatest belcanto Masterwork of Gaetano Donizetti. We well remember the famous aria “Una Furtiva Lagrima” sang by the great Caruso, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa and other great tenors to our days.
