Alexander Dumas was inspired in his play La Dame aux Camelias (The Lady of the Camellias) by the a beautiful and young courtesan Marie Duplessis in Paris around 1860. She died at only 23 year old. Verdi was very much attracted by Dumas’s play whose argument used to compose La Traviata (The Fallen Woman). In the opera Violetta Valery character represented the young lady desired by most important and rich people of Paris on the Eighteen Century. One day she meets a young man Alfredo with whom she falls in a true and passionate love. Their loves was against Alfredo’s father wishes who demands Violetta a supreme sacrifice from her to save the family's reputation. Her broken heart and the disease that ravages her body bring her to an early and tragic death.
Verdi's masterwork of La Traviata is one of opera's most sublimely drawn characters, which has continued to captivate audiences for more than 150 years. Verdi's glorious music and Violetta's moving demise make this opera one of the most compelling experiences to our days.
